Professor Lawrence Stephen Abeln

Dean of Business

Dr Lawrence Stephen Abeln has two decades of academic leadership experience directing top ranked MBA, EMBA and Executive Education programs. He began his academic career at the MIT Sloan School of Management as the Director of the MBA Program at the age of 26 was the youngest director of any internationally ranked MBA in the world at the time.

Dr Abeln previously served as Associate Dean of the Business School at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. He was also the Associate Dean of the Business School at The University of Texas at Austin where he directed a portfolio of five MBA Programs with 800 students and executive education.

    Dr. Abeln received a Ph.D. in Management and M.Phil. in International Relations from Cambridge University, where he was a Rotary Foundation Scholar. He received his undergraduate degree from The University of Pennsylvania where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude.

    Dr. Abeln served from 2007 through 2011 as Deputy Dean (Deputy Director) of The University of Cambridge Judge Business School a member of the Faculty of Management at the University of Cambridge, and as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Cambridge Executive Education. Dr. Abeln initiated and developed the university’s new Executive MBA.

    He introduced a portfolio of 25 new executive education programs and expanded the outreach in custom executive education to include leadership frameworks for the university, government and industry sectors with extensive experience in the Middle East, South Asia and China. He also taught executive courses and developed curriculum as a member of the Cambridge Faculty in Management. He negotiated international partnership agreements on behalf of Cambridge to deliver joint programs with other academic institutions throughout the world.

    Dr. Abeln has extensive experience in the media as an economic and financial commentator with over 100 interviews and has written on the trends in graduate management education. He has been quoted in The New York Times, The Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, The London Times, The Independent and other international publications. He has appeared on ABC, CBS and NBC television and radio affiliates. He also worked previously for KYW-TV and for The Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News.

    Dr. Abeln served on the Board of Directors of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Enterprise Forum and as Executive Director of the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence, was a founding core team member of the Shell Project Academy and has worked with many global corporate clients across industries to develop and deliver management education. He was a member of the Board of Governors of the Kings School. He also served as Adjunct Professor of Management at The University of Michigan Ann Arbor School of Business.

Professor Paul Coram

Head of School - Accounting & Finance

Paul Coram is a Professor and Head of School in the School of Accounting and Finance. His research focuses on the effect of auditing and financial accounting information on decision-making through behavioural research methods. His research has been published in leading international journals, including Auditing: A Journal of Practice and Theory, for which he currently serves on the editorial board. Paul has participated in several significant research collaborations with various professional and commercial organisations, including two ARC Linkage Grant projects.

Paul qualified as a Chartered Accountant in Adelaide and originally worked as an auditor. He has strong ongoing links with the accounting profession, particularly with the Institute of Chartered Accountants through Regional Council service and also by providing advice on their education programs. Paul is committed to ensuring the quality and scholarship of accounting education. He was the inaugural winner of the Pearson Accounting Lecturer of the Year Award and serves on the editorial board of Issues in Accounting Education.

Professor Manuel Becerra

Head of School - Marketing & Management
Bachelor in Economics and Business Administration (Universidad Complutense, Spain), Master of Science in Management (University of Southern California, USA), Ph.D. in Strategic Management (University of Maryland, USA)

His research focuses on issues of corporate strategy, competitive dynamics, and trust, and it has been published in journals like the Academy of Management Review, Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Journal of Finance, and Journal of Management. His book Theory of the firm for strategic management was recently published by Cambridge University Press.

Associate Professor Bryan Howieson

Associate Professor

Bryan Howieson is Associate Professor at the University of Adelaide. He has held prior positions at the Adelaide Graduate School of Business and the Universities of South Australia and Western Australia. His teaching and research interests relate primarily to financial reporting and accounting standard setting but he also has strong interests in accounting education, professional ethics and corporate governance.

Dr Max Bessell

Senior Lecturer
B. Business (Acc), PhD, FCA

Max has a PhD from the University of Adelaide and is a Fellow of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand. He has over 18 years of professional and legal experience in legal and accounting practices. In addition, his university experience encompasses over 15 years of academic and senior management positions.

He has taught accounting and auditing at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and his research deals in audit, general taxation concepts and business-legal perspectives. Max has had a long association with Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand including Deputy Chairman of the Regional Council for SA/NT and Regional Council member for over 5 years together with being a facilitator in Professional Year/CA program for 8 years. He is also a past member of Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand's National Quality Review Committee (and Chairman for 5 years) and a past Chairman of the Australian Business Deans Council International network.

Dr Robyn Davidson

Senior Lecturer and HDR Program Director
Adv Dip Acc, BCom (Hons 1st Class), PhD (Electronic Commerce), Graduate Certificate in Education (Higher Education)

Dr Robyn Davidson joined the University of Adelaide business school in 2009 and teaches financial accounting and information systems. Previously Robyn worked and studied at Flinders University. She has a PhD in electronic commerce, an honours degree majoring in accounting and computer science, and education qualifications.

In Robyn's PhD research she devised a way of identifying and measuring electronic service quality gaps. She tested the method on Australian wineries. Her current research interests are in technology use in teaching, information systems, electronic service quality, Web 2.0 and business models. She has published in education, IS and business journals.

Ms Kate Harris

Adjunct Senior Lecturer

Kate teaches in the areas of financial accounting and accounting theory. She has had experience in the integration of communication skills into the curriculum, and has an interest in improving teaching methodology. Her research interests are in financial accounting, currently corporate governance, as well as accounting education.

Emeritus Professor Scott Henderson

Emeritus Professor
MEc (Adel), PhD (UCLA), FCPA

Emeritus Professor Scott Henderson's academic career is lengthy and distinguished, he was Professor of Commerce at the University of Adelaide for 22 years, becoming Emeritus Professor in 2002. Prior to this he was Professor of Accounting and Finance at Monash University.

Mr Michael Jones

Michael was a senior lecturer at the University of South Australia for 17 years until 1998. In addition to teaching at the University of Adelaide Michael also undertakes consulting work in the area of professional development. He is a major author for CPA Australia's professional CPA program and a consultant to Edwards Marshall in the area of accounting standards and financial reporting.

Mr James Larkin

Mr Will Mackay

Mr Mahmud Al Masum

Dr Tony McMurtrie

Tony came to academia from the private sector after many years experience in the management and administration of small businesses. Included in this were two years of employment in a public accounting practice. Prior to his appointment to the University of Adelaide, he was an associate lecturer at Flinders University.

Mr Ashley Miller

Ashley has worked with ANZ Banking group for 10 years in State and National roles. Prior to ANZ, he worked for KPMG for 11 years. Ashley has been actively involved in accounting education, he was the previous national chair of the Education Committee for the Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand Ashley has been an adjunct lecturer since 2001.

Dr Lisa Powell

Lisa joined the Business School of the University of Adelaide in April 2007. Prior to this, Lisa taught at the University of South Australia for 20 years. Dr Giao Reynolds

Giao Reynolds is an Assistant Lecturer in the University of Adelaide Business School. She is experienced in teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Prior to joining academia in 2009, Giao worked as an accountant in a number of state government and private organisations. She is an Australia CPA.
Giao has a Diploma in Project Management, a Bachelor degree in Banking and International Finance (Honours) from Flinders University, a Masters of Commerce (Accounting) from University of South Australia, and a PhD (Accounting) from Flinders University. Her PhD investigated the linkages between corporate environmental strategy and management accounting in a sample of Australian companies.

Professor Grant Richardson

Chair in Accounting

Grant Richardson is Chaired Professor of Accounting in the Discipline of Accounting and Information Systems within the Business School at the University of Adelaide. Grant has worked and held a number of full-time and visiting positions at leading academic institutions around the world, including China (Mainland), Hong Kong (SAR), Japan, Singapore and the United States. He is also a Senior Research Fellow in the Faculty of Business and Economics at Monash University, and serves on the Editorial Boards of several internationally renowned accounting, finance and taxation journals. Grant consultants regularly for industry and government in the areas of accounting and taxation.

Dr Indrit Troshani

Dr Chee Cheong

Mr Graeme Gould

Graeme is the lecturer-in-charge of Corporate Accounting III,Corporate Accounting (M)and Equity Valuation and Analysis (M). Dr Tariq Haque

Dr Tariq Haque joined The University of Adelaide in February 2008. He completed his PhD in Finance from The University of Melbourne in 2007 where he was also a Senior Tutor in the Department of Finance. He has also previously worked in the insurance industry as an actuarial analyst.

Dr Sigitas Karpavicius

Senior Lecturer
BEc, MA, PhD (UNSW).

Sigitas is a senior lecturer of finance at the Adelaide Business School, which he joined in 2015. Dr. Karpavicius received his PhD from the University of New South Wales in 2011. Prior to his PhD studies, he obtained MA degree in Economics and Management Science from Humboldt University in Berlin and did research at the Economics Department of the Bank of Lithuania.

Dr George Mihaylov

After completing his Honours degree in 2009 George held various teaching assistant positions with the School of Accounting and Finance at The University of Adelaide. Between 2010 and 2011 he was also a contract researcher for the International Centre for Financial Services. In 2012 he joined KPMG as a graduate auditor. He is currently on a 2-year career break from KPMG, while returning to the University to teach, publish and complete his PhD.

Dr Bruce Rosser

Mr Gary Tan

Gary is a Lecturer in the Business School with interests and research activities focused on derivatives trading and risk management strategies. Formerly in corporate consultancy roles with the big four accounting firms, in senior corporate financial roles and board directorships of listed companies and trading member of derivative exchange.

Professor Alfred Yawson

Professor and Associate Head - Research
B. Accounting (First Class Honours) (University of Ghana), MSc and PhD in Finance (Queen’s University Belfast), CA

Alfred Yawson is a Professor in Corporate Finance. Prior to taking up this position he was an Associate Professor in Finance at the University of Adelaide Business School. He also held the position of Lecturer and Senior Lecturer at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.  He was a Visiting Research Scholar at Cass Business School, City University London from January 2013 to January 2014. His primary research interests are corporate finance, particularly corporate restructuring (mergers and acquisitions, divestitures, employee layoffs and strategic alliances, investment banking) and corporate governance. His research has been supported by a competitive grant from the Australian Research Council (ARC). He has published in leading finance journals including the Journal of Financial Economics, Journal of Banking and Finance, Journal of Empirical Finance and Journal of Business Finance and Accounting. Born and raised in Ghana, Professor Yawson obtained a first class honours degree in Accounting from the University of Ghana, a Master of Science in Finance with distinction and a PhD in Finance from Queen’s University Belfast in the UK. He is a Chartered Accountant with industry experience from reputable financial institutions. Professor Yawson was part of the government team that pioneered the Value Added Tax policy implementation in Ghana.

Dr Chia-Feng (Jeffrey) Yu

Jeffrey Yu is an Elected Member of Phi Tau Phi Scholastic Honor Society of Republic of China and has won a number of awards and scholarships including the Donald Cochrane Postgraduate Scholarship from Monash University, the Dean's Postgraduate Research Award, Faculty of Business and Economics, Monash University and the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship & Monash Research Graduate Scholarship.

Ralf Zurbruegg is a Professor of Finance at the University of Adelaide Business School. He was previously the Acting Dean, and before that Deputy Head as well as Associate Dean within the Faculty of the Professions as community/external liaison, and has served on various committees both inside the University and in the private sector. Ralf has taught and held various visiting positions around the world, including the UK, Singapore, Switzerland, UAE and the US. He is also a Senior Fellow at the Bradford University School of Management, a Justice of the Peace for South Australia, serves on the editorial board of several other journals, is the academic convenor of the University's International Centre for Financial Services and a director of a quantitative investment solutions company.

He regularly consults for industry, particularly for the hedge fund market, as well as being an expert witness on a number of state and federal court cases. He has also appeared on television and been quoted in national newspapers over the years.

Dr Amal Karunaratna

Adjunct Associate Professor

Amal is an active researcher in the area of International Marketing, with publications in international journals. His current research interests include the influence of consumer responses to information about the country of origin of components in motor vehicles and how they influence perceptions for the whole product. He is also interested in the influence of culture and the internationalisation of firms. More recently, he is working in the area of how Biotechnology firms become internationalised.

His research interests include:

Dr Chris Smith

Management Discipline Leader

Chris' first full-time job was as a clinical psychologist working mainly in the field of adult psychiatry. From there Chris moved into the business world wherein a brief stint as a senior IR/HR manager was followed by GM/MD roles across a range of industries and settings ending in a Divisional CEO role overseeing a range of companies in the UK, Europe and Australasia. He entered the academic world via Warwick Business School (UK) and joined Adelaide at the beginning of 2004.  A registered psychologist in Australian and a chartered occupational psychologist in the UK his academic interests centre on the role and practices of management in developing and implementing organizational strategy at various levels.

His current research interests include:

Georges is a Senior Lecturer at the Adelaide Business School at The University of Adelaide. Georges has extensive experience in graduate management education in Australia, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

Professor Ockie Bosch

Prof Research Fellow
Doctor of Science (University of the North West, South Africa). M.Sc (cum laude) (Potchefstroom University for CHE, South Africa). B.Sc (PU for CHE, South Africa.)

Ockie was Professor and Head of the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences at the University of Potchefstroom in South Africa from 1985 to 1993 and Head of the Department of Life Sciences of the University of South Africa (dual position) from 1990 to 1993. In 1993 he became a Research Director in Landcare New Zealand, and moved to Queensland in 2000 to become Professor in Natural Systems at The University of Queensland. From 2002-2011 he was Head of the School for Integrative Systems at the university of Queensland. In 2012 he moved to the University of Adelaide where he leads the Systems Design and Complexity Management Alliance.

Dr Marilyn Clarke

Senior Lecturer and Associate Head - Learning and Teaching

Marilyn Clarke joined the Business School at the beginning of 2009 as a Senior Lecturer in the Management discipline.  During her 20 year teaching career she has taught in the management discipline across all three universities in South Australia; University of SA, Flinders University and University of Adelaide. She has extensive teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level, both locally and offshore in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Prior to her academic career she worked for Telstra in a range of functional areas including internal audit, business planning, marketing and HR. She has also worked in HR at the University of SA and as a business consultant.

Dr Lisa Daniel

Lisa Daniel is a lecturer in strategy and organisational theory. Mr David Murphy

David graduated from the South Australian Institute of Technology in Accountancy, majoring in Company Evaluation.  Studies in Education, Education Administration and Applied Finance and Investment followed.  He is a Certified Practicing Accountant and a Fellow of the Financial Services Institute of Australasia.

David was Head of Economics and Business Studies at Prince Alfred College, Adelaide, until 1994.

From teaching David moved to the field of Corporate Governance. In recent years he has occupied the positions of Company Secretary and Chief Financial Officer in firms engaged in Outdoor Education, Hospitality, Forestry, Transport and Viticulture. David is a Partner in two family firms engaged in stock market activities and commercial consultancy.

Dr Nam Nguyen

Nam is a core member of the newly established Systems Design and Complexity Management (SDCM) Alliance in The University of Adelaide Business School (UABS). He has been awarded a number of nationally and internationally competitive academic fellowships and research grants worth more than $1 million. He is also a Recipient of the prestigious 2011 Australian Leadership Award and has recently been elected as Vice President of the International Society for the Systems Sciences (VP for Membership and Conferences).

Mr David Pender

Since 2002 David has been the Principal of Knowledge Perspectives, a consulting collaborative that specialises in the management and development of knowledge intensive organisations and from 2003 as an adjunct lecturer at the Adelaide Business School (formerly the Adelaide Graduate School of Business).

David has also practiced for 13 years as a Chartered Accountant and 12 years in senior executive positions in the financial services history.

Dr John Rice

Professor John Rice is a Visiting Research Fellow at the University of Adelaide Business School and Professor at the University of New England Business School. His most recent previous appointments include Associate Professor at Grifith Business School, and Chief Researcher at the National Centre for Vocational Education Research in Adelaide, before which he held academic roles at the Universities of Adelaide, Canberra, and South Australia. John completed his PhD from Curtin University’s Graduate School of Business in 2004. For his thesis, he explored the contingent use of strategic alliances by high technology manufacturing firms. He has published more than forty refereed journal articles in journals including Research Policy, the Journal of Small Business Management, the International Small Business Journal, the Journal of Business Ethics and the International Journal of Human Resource Management.

Dr Peter Sandiford

Dr Jill Thomas

Visiting Research Fellow

Havinfg recently retired hrom her substantive teaching and research role, Jill is a Visiting Research Fellow in the Adelaide Business School furthering her reseach and education focus in the family business field. Her teaching in the Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs in Adelaide and Singapore was in the leadership and family business areas.  She also teaches in the Faculty's Executive Education programs.

Jill's doctoral studies focused on leadership and family business and her current research activity relates to governance, communication, internationalisation and human resource issues in family owned and managed businesses in the small to medium enterprise (SME) sector.  Jill's early career was in Human Resources Mangement and Traning and Development in both the private and higher education sector.

Jill is co-founder of the Family Business Education adn Research Group (FBERG) in the Adelaide Business School with her colleague Dr Chris Graves.  She has recently completed a term as Vice-Chair of the Family Firm Institute(FFI, based in teh USA) and is a fellow of FFi.  She is also a Director of Family Business Australia (FBA).

Professor Ercan Tirtiroglu

PhD - Administrative & Enginerring Systems (Union College & University, Schenectady, New York, USA), MA in Marketing (Bosphorus University - Istanbul, Turkey and BSc in Management Science at (METU - Ankara, Turkey)

Ercan Tirtiroglu is Professor of Operations Management & Decision Sciences.  He joined the University of Adelaide from UMass Dartmouth, USA. During 2009-2010, while on sabbatical leave from UMass-D, he was a Visiting Professor at Adelaide's Business School.

He currently serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Operational Research (IJOR) and the International Journal of Services and Operations Management (IJSOM). Previously, he also served (during 2004-2011) on the editorial board of The Journal of Educators Online (The JEO). He also serves as a referee/reviewer for a number of academic journals.

Dr Sam Wells

Senior Lecturer
BA (Hons - 1st Class), D.Phil. Oxon

Sam graduated from The University of Adelaide in 1978 with 1st Class Honours in History. As South Australia’s 1979 Rhodes Scholar, he completed his doctorate at Oxford in 1983.  His doctoral research focused on a group of monastic letter writers in the late eleventh, early twelfth centuries.

Sam spent 18 years in corporate human resource management and organisational development.  He established his own consulting business in 2001 and continues to advise CEOs and executive teams in all sectors on cultivating organisations in which employees at allcan 'be everything they are'.

In 2005 Sam was appointed as a Senior Lecturer at the University of Adelaide. He was the MBA Program Director from 2007 to 2011 and Discipline Leader for the Management Discipline in the Business School from 2008 to 2011.  He teaches an MBA core course, Managing Contemporary Organisations, and offers an MBA elective in organisational sustainability.

Ms Lois Whittall

Lois has a working and teaching background in Organisational Development, Human Resource Management and Finance. She has worked in a variety of public and private sector organisations in the UK and Australia in senior management roles. She has also consulted extensively with local and multi-national companies in Australia and North and South East Asia.

Mr Max Zornada

Max Zornada is an Adjunct Lecturer and the Director and Principal Consultant of Australian based Management Consulting and Education firm Henley Management Group, which he founded in 1991.

Max is a world recognised thought leader in Business Improvement, Operational Excellence - including Six Sigma and Lean Thinking, and Project Management. He has been a consulting Master Black Belt to major organisation in various sectors including, financial services, telecommunications, aerospace and mining.

Dr Chris Medlin

Chris teaches in Strategic Marketing, Market Planning, Market Management, and Market Research. Chris is on the editorial board of the Industrial Marketing Management journal, the Journal of Business Research and the Journal of  Business Market Management. He is also a member of the review board for the Journal of General Management and the Editorial Board of the Journal of Business & Industrial Marketing.

Chris is a Fellow of the Australian Marketing Institute. He has been a member of the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) for more than 20 years and he is a member of their Marketing Accreditation committee for higher education institutions. Chris has been awarded Certified Practising Marketer (CPM) status by the AMI.

Dr Jodie Conduit

Jodie is a Senior Lecturer, with extensive experience teaching undergraduate, postgraduate, MBA, and executive courses at several of Australia’s leading universities. Her teaching interests include market research, marketing management, and strategic marketing.

Jodie also has extensive industry experience as a research consultant and market research manager. Most recently she was a Senior Market Research Mangagert recently, she was a Senior Market Research Manager with National Australia Bank and Principle Consultant with Forethought Research.

As a market research specialist, Jodie has worked on a wide range of projects incorporating product and brand development, marketing effectiveness studies, service delivery design, and customer satisfaction programs.

Roberta has a strong background in industry, with executive experience in management and marketing. Previous roles include Regional Manager, Coles Myer Properties and Sales and Distribution Manager in the finance industry. Roberta is also a company director for an engineering design, research and consultancy firm.

Dr Steve Goodman

Dr Steve Goodman is the Program Director-Higher Degrees by Research and a Senior Lecturer at the Adelaide Business School. He is an active researcher in the area of marketing - specifically consumer choice and business decision making in the wine supply chain context.

Prior to his current role Dr Goodman was previously Discipline Leader for Marketing at the then Adelaide Graduate School of Business (The University of Adelaide). He also lectured in Business and Marketing Planning and Marketing Communications at the University of South Australia, Marketing Management at Flinders University and Wine Marketing and Marketing Communications at the University of Adelaide (Waite).

Dr Plewa is a senior lecturer in marketing and Assocaite Head (Research) for the School of Marketing and Management.  Her primary researhc interests lie in the areas of univeristy-wide engagement, services and relationship marketing as well as corporate social responsibility.  Dr Plewa was recently awarded an inaugural Barbara Kidman Women's Fellowship in 2013 following Australian Research Council Grants in 2009 and 2011.  Her research has bbeen published in leading journals such as R&D Mangement, Educationand Training, Psychology & Marketing, Journal of Services Marketing, Marketing Theory, the Australasian Marketing Journal, and the Journal of Engineering and Technology Management

Dr Sally Rao Hill

Dr Sally Rao Hill is a senior lecturer in marketing. She is the lecturer in charge of Consumer Behaviour (II and Consumer Behaviour (M).  She is an active researcher and has published in the European Journal of Marketing, Journal of Business and Industrial Marketing, Qualitative Market research: an International Journal, Australasian Marketing Journal, International Journal of Internet Marketing and Advertising and Journal of Internet Business. She has won the best paper award in an international conference.

Her research interests include:

  • Services employee attributes/behaviour and customer reactions
  • Consumer psychology and digital media
  • Consumer innovation adoption behaviour
